[Appeal] The screams vanishing into the cold earth must be stopped
An earnest plea from farmers spending the winter in tears, standing in empty henhouses
Every winter, a fear more chilling than the cold wind grips farmers’ hearts. In this past winter alone, as many as 6,677,389 living beings were buried in the soil. Over the past five years, the number of chickens we have had to let go has averaged more than 11 million per year. To some, these may seem like nothing more than numbers in a statistic. But to us farmers, they were living eyes, lives that greeted each morning with us, and precious companions who sustained our families’ livelihoods.
On top of the graves of innocent lives
In the name of avian influenza, chickens that are sick are killed, and so are healthy ones that might become infected. Small and fragile lives that have spent their whole lives laying eggs for people become cold corpses in a single moment and are pushed into the ground.
Watching this scene, farmers feel as though a crown of thorns has been placed on their heads. We tremble every night in guilt for failing to protect lives we cared for like our own children, and in helplessness before the massive excavators that stand in front of us, and we weep.
Biosecurity that fails no matter how hard we try: who is this mass culling really for?
For twenty years, the government has stubbornly clung to the harsh method of “mass culling.” Farmers are forced to shut out sunlight and wind, confining chickens like machines and making them live in a haze of disinfectant. Yet the virus has grown more virulent, attacking us regardless of how high we build our fences.
These out-of-touch measures paint farmers as criminals. Even when we do everything we can to prevent infection, if an outbreak occurs, we are blamed and penalized as if it were solely “the farmer’s responsibility.” We are not most afraid of the disease itself. What truly terrifies us is the reduction of compensation and the wave of blame that come after infection, to the point that we end up tearfully applying for the pre-emptive killing of perfectly healthy birds. Does the state truly understand this tragic reality?
It is time to choose life, not death
How long will we keep turning this land into a vast graveyard? We already have the example of overcoming foot-and-mouth disease in cattle and pigs through vaccination. Now that avian influenza has become endemic around the world, we must face it with the power of medicine, through vaccination as a rational alternative.
The cost of killing tens of millions of birds, polluting the soil, and paying out compensation is far higher than the cost of introducing vaccines to protect life. This is not merely a question of economic efficiency. It is the bare minimum of respect for life that we must uphold as human beings.
Take our hand
Today, we are forming the “Citizen Council Against Mass Culling and for the Introduction of Vaccination” to break the chain of inhumane mass culling.
Please lend your strength so that the screams of chickens are no longer buried underground, and so that farmers no longer have to bow their heads like wrongdoers. We earnestly appeal to you to join our nationwide signature campaign so that chickens can breathe under warm sunlight, not beneath cold soil.
Until the day our demands are realized, we will not retreat from this path of protecting life.
